WHAT YOU’LL DO
The Associate Editor & Engagement Coordinator supports the Director of Editorial & Engagement / Editor in Chief in producing compelling content and managing editorial workflows across print and digital platforms. This role is designed as a growth track toward Managing Editor, offering the opportunity to develop leadership skills while making an immediate impact in writing, editing, planning and engagement. You’ll be responsible for creating and curating content that connects with readers for our Western Colorado publications while also overseeing digital messaging through social media, email and website updates. You’ll collaborate with the Digital Media Specialist, who handles visuals and technical execution, ensuring words and graphics come together seamlessly for campaigns and audience engagement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Editorial & Communications
- Write and edit features, department content, calendars and promotional material
- Coordinate with freelance writers and source interview subjects and story leads
- Proofread, rewrite and fact-check content for accuracy and consistency in style and tone
- Assist with assigning and tracking projects using Trello and other project management tools
- Oversee content collection and maintain editorial project timelines
- Provide excellent customer service to readers, contributors and advertisers
- Represent BEACON at community events and report on relevant topics as needed
- Support editorial operations and special projects as directed by the Editor in Chief
Digital Messaging & Engagement
- Draft and schedule social media posts with a focus on clear, engaging storytelling
- Write and edit content for newsletters and email campaigns, ensuring consistency in tone and messaging
- Post articles, calendars and editorial content to the website
- Partner with the Digital Media Specialist, who provides supporting graphics and technical execution, to align words and visuals across campaigns
- Monitor and track audience engagement on stories, emails and social channels; report findings to improve reach and effectiveness
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in communications, journalism, English, marketing or related field—or equivalent professional experience
- Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with strong attention to tone and audience
- Strong organizational and time management skills; able to juggle multiple projects
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Familiarity with social media and email platforms; ability to track engagement and provide insights
- Solid communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
- Reliable transportation, auto insurance and a valid driver’s license
BONUS SKILLS
- Photography
- Adobe InDesign or Creative Suite experience
- Familiarity with CMS platforms and digital publishing tools
- Experience with email marketing platforms such as MailChimp
PAY RANGE:
$18-$22 hourly
HOURS PER WEEK:
